Statement by PERC Youth Committee
to the World Day for Decent Work

The global economic and financial crisis, followed by increasing numbers of lay-offs and unemployment rates, affects the life of each and every individual, young people being especially vulnerable. Nowadays, young people all over Europe face difficulties in entering the labour market and are often forced to work in precarious working conditions and under atypical labour contracts. Their chances for decent jobs are rapidly decreasing. This makes their job prospects depressing and does not allow them to be fully integrated into society.

At the same time, the young generation of today is the best educated generation ever, familiar with new technologies, more mobile and open to new opportunities; a generation with the highest potential to contribute to a lasting recovery from the current crisis.

The Youth committee of PERC, as a representative body of trade union youth in Europe, from Lisbon to Vladivostok, is extremely worried about the future and the challenges that the young people are facing and will continue to face, because of the crisis. The youth is not a resource to be wasted.

During this week and on the occasion of the World Day for Decent Work on October the 7th, young people from all over the world are mobilized and will demonstrate their international solidarity at various national and international actions: cultural events, sports games, workplace meetings, leafleting, demonstrations, conferences, round tables, discussions, internet forums etc. We are united in our demands and have one common message to all responsible institutions and politicians at national and international level: Decent work must be at the centre of government actions to bring back economic growth and build a new global economy that puts people first.
We want Decent Work and Decent Life for all!

Decent work, decent life and decent future for young people in Europe and all over the world!

In a time of crisis and for a better future – invest in young people, because we are the hope and reality of tomorrow!
