According to the latest information from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there were 281 million international migrants in the world. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) notes 103 million forcibly displaced people worldwide. It’s unacceptable that far-right political rhetoric continues to normalize xenophobia and finds its way into mainstream progressive political forces pushing the harmful view of migrants as a problem. More and more people are forced to migrate, not only for economic reasons or not being able to sustain their living due to climate change, but out of fear for their own or loved ones lives due to wars and violence based on extreme beliefs and terrorism. They seek salvation and are ready and willing to integrate and respect the societies in which they seek asylum. Many of them are part of vulnerable groups - mothers with children, unaccompanied children, people with disabilities, young and old people.
Migrants bring invaluable skills, culture and resilience that enrich communities and boost economies in their new homes. Inclusive societies where migration is recognized as a source of mutual growth and opportunity can only be achieved through inclusive policies. The PERC Youth Committee remains committed for advocating for these policies that protect the rights of migrants and promote fair opportunities for all.
