NIS economic experts meeting

The PERC and the ILO-ACTRAV organised annual meeting of the trade union economic experts from the NIS countries. The meeting continues cooperation of trade union professional experts as a part of the PERC coordinated UnionToUnion project.

Joint meeting of Network of SEE and NIS trade unions economic experts “Investments, austerity, labor market deregulation effects and inequality”

News Within the ITUC – PERC support project of the Swedish trade unions “Union to Union“, a first joint meeting of Network of SEE and NIS trade union economic experts was held on 5-6 May 2016 in Budva – Montenegro. The theme was “Investments, austerity, labor market deregulation effects, and inequality”. Trade union economic experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Kosovo have actively participated in the meeting. Working languages of the meeting were Russian, BCSM, and Albanian.

The IMF’s false policies hit Ukraine

The Ukrainian economy has contracted in the two quarters of this year by roughly 15% on a year-on-year comparison while industrial production and export collapsed. The renewed IMF program will do little to bring the economy back on to its feet. It will not only fail to do good but risks producing an economic disaster similar to the disaster that has struck Greece. Policies that ignore the adverse effects of austerity on domestic demand, the unsustainability of debts and the politically fragile situation will cause further economic contraction and contribute to political instability and social injustice.

The IMF and Ukraine

Ukraine has been the subject of IMF programmes under various government since 2004. Ukraine’s current IMF programme bears some resemblance with the Troika program imposed on Greece and is likely to produce a similar economic disaster. The harshness of austerity and accumulation of unsustainable debt coupled with economic policy based on fantasy rather than evidence that ignores the adverse effects of austerity on demand makes abound in both countries. The Ukraine IMF programme suffers as well from giving inadequate attention to democracy, governance and social inclusion of citizens.
