Training seminar on “Leadership and Capacity Building for women in trade unions in the Balkan region”, 19-21 May , Sarajevo

The training seminar was organized with the support from FES and represents the first cycle of a three year project in all regions of PERC. The participants in the training seminar were mainly young women trade union officers from some of the Balkan countries: Serbia, Montenegro, BIH, Croatia, Macedonia and Albania. The training was conducted with the support of the ETUI education officer, Valerica Dumitrescu, and was concentrated on the following main chapters: Women’s involvement in trade unions ; Confidence building ; Communication ; Team work; Women’s structures and networks; Gender policy in the unions and developing campaigns on organizing young women in unions.

Marieke Koning , the ITUC expert from the Equality Department explained the Count us In campaign and how to organize women in trade unions and increase the participation of women in trade union work.

The coordinator of the ITUC Sarajevo office, Enisa Salimovic, explained the PERC policy in the region; the activities of the office and the collaboration with the unions in the Balkans.

The main purpose of the training seminar was to :to encourage and empower women workers to became more actively involved in trade union; to increase self-confidence of women who aspire to become trade union leaders by giving them the relevant skills and knowledge; to raise awareness amongst trade union activists on how to support newly elected leaders; to enable women to build their collective knowledge of how to strengthen effective women’s leadership by learning from women who are in leadership and to strengthen the position of women in their trade union organisations by giving them relevant skills and knowledge.

The results of the training seminar will be disseminated and reported to the PERC Women’s Committee.
